english paper piecing tiny quilt

the title is almost longer than the size of this tiny quilt ...

first of all: if you want to try english paper piecing (epp) - go for it! the technique is really easy and fun.

already in preparation for a workshop in autumn i wanted to finally try english paper piecing (and also because i should have made another workshop sample urgently; so – procrastinating on a professional level).

in general, i often do my patchwork seams with whip stitches (either on the left or on the right side; invisible or very visible), because i prefer this to backstitching/running stitching small pieces. but usually without paper templates involved (which orcoyoyo thankfully laser cut for me), as with english paper piecing.

i had been warned - mona had already informed me that stopping when sewing hexagons together using english paper piecing technique is really difficult to impossible. mona is an experienced patchworker, so i was not at all surprised that and how much she was right. it really is such a fine, relaxing way to join pieces of fabric by hand; even basting the fabric around the paper templates is deeply relaxing.

as the quilt was intended as a sample and test object from the outset, the pieces of fabric were chosen and combined very randomly in terms of pattern and colour; a colourful collection of my small fabric remnants, without thinking too much about it, and only hexagons.

so here is the colourful piece:
